SPRINGFIELD, MASS. (August 30, 2018) – Furthering its commitment to the Western Massachusetts community, this week MGM Springfield partnered with two influential non-profit organizations – Head Start and Square One – to support their essential programming. MGM Springfield’s General Manager Alex Dixon and Vice President of Human Resources Marikate Murren were on hand at each event.

On Monday, Aug. 27, Square One President and CEO Joan Kagan welcomed Dixon and Murren alongside the resort’s assistant executive chef Chris Smigel, who led a healthy cooking demonstration at Square One’s Tommie Johnson Child & Family Center for 13 four- and five-year-old students. Chef Smigel shared the health benefits of fresh ingredients such as kale and carrots, both of which he incorporated into a tasty vegetarian chili the children enjoyed for lunch. The demonstration preceded a check presentation of $25,000 from MGM Springfield to Square One, a non-profit organization that serves 500 children in the Springfield area affected by food insecurity, abuse, neglect and a challenging home life.

On Tuesday, Aug. 28, Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno and Congressman Richard Neal joined Dixon and Murren in a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the MGM Head Start Child & Family Center, a multi-service agency that provides early childhood programs. The new center will serve eligible working families, including MGM Springfield team members, by providing half- and full-day childhood development programs at no cost. Dixon and Murren presented another $25,000 check to the organization to support the charity’s contributions to the community.
