'Yes, Yes, All the News that’s Fit To Print' by Than Hussein Clark at Art Basel in Basel 2017
LAS VEGAS (June 8, 2017) – MGM Resorts International, one of the world’s leading entertainment companies, continues its long-standing commitment to presenting and supporting art in public spaces by becoming an Associate Partner of Art Basel. The partnership began in December 2016 when MGM Resorts became the Public sector’s Partner for Art Basel in Miami Beach. The relationship strengthened with the support of Kingsley Ng’s ‘Twenty-Five Minutes Older’ Tram project during the Hong Kong show in March 2017 and now has grown into an Associate Partnership starting at Art Basel in Basel in June 2017.
As MGM Resorts developed and supported numerous and varied art-related partnerships, projects, initiatives and collections, the company established a multifaceted arts program, MGM Resorts Art & Culture, to encompass all of it under one umbrella. The program’s priorities include identifying projects that create special, accessible experiences for audiences of every age and interest. ’Yes, Yes, All the News that’s Fit To Print’ (2017) by Than Hussein Clark for Art Basel achieves just that. Otto Rudolf Salvisberg’s ’Erste Kirche Christi’ – a little-known but remarkable Modernist church from 1936 – will be transformed into the artist’s own version of a Broadway theatre. Clark’s newest theatrical production and his 13th full-scale dramatic work is written, designed and directed by the artist, and performed by members of the Artists’ Theatre Company – The Director’s Theatre Writer’s Theater. Guests can enjoy free public access to evening performances on Monday, June 12; Wednesday, June 14; and Saturday, June 17.
"Art Basel is the premier international art show for Modern and contemporary art and I have a high level of respect for how it brings people together from around the world, featuring intriguing works that inspire creative thought and conversation,” said Jim Murren, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of MGM Resorts International. “MGM Resorts recognizes the power art has to be transformative and we are committed to engaging with public art not only within our resorts but at important events such as Art Basel.”
MGM Resorts’ focus on art and culture has developed throughout the years into a tremendous collection within the company’s distinctive world-class brands including Bellagio, MGM Grand and Mandalay Bay. When ARIA opened in 2009, it introduced the first major permanent collection of art in Las Vegas integrated into a public space and is one of the world’s largest and most ambitious corporate art collections in existence today. Acclaimed artists, sculptors and visionaries featured within MGM Resorts’ vast and diverse collections include works by Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, Henry Moore, David Hockney, Jenny Holzer, Richard Long, Sol Lewitt, Frank Stella, James Turrell, Maya Lin, Claes Oldenburg, Richard Serra, Nick Cave, Nancy Rubins, Isa Genzken and Antony Gormley.
Art is a cornerstone of the sensory experience within MGM Resorts destinations, and as new resorts are imagined, art plays a key role in the overall design. The company’s December 2016 opening of MGM National Harbor in Maryland introduced the MGM National Harbor Heritage Collection inspired by the Washington D.C. and Capital Region’s rich culture and history. As with each project or development, the company considered the community, the environment and the diversity of thought when commissioning and procuring works by local and international sculptors, photographers and mixed-media artists. A newly commissioned large-scale sculpture was created with found objects and industrial artifacts by musician and artist Bob Dylan. Other featured artists include Chul Hyun Ahn, Alice Aycock, Margaret Boozer, John Dreyfuss, Sam Gilliam, John Safer and Liao Yibai, among others.
MGM Resorts has collaborated on numerous art projects, including a cornerstone partnership with the Nevada Museum of Art and Art Production Fund to sponsor Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone’s Seven Magic Mountains, one of the largest land-based art installations to be completed in more than 40 years. The colorful public artwork is on view in the Nevada desert just outside of Las Vegas through May 2018.
