Big Payday for South Mississippi Player Who Wins $103,752 First Place in Main Event and $42,563 Second Place in Opener

19 September 2018

BILOXI, Miss – Sept. 19, 2018 – The Mississippi poker scene saw record-breaking action Sept. 6-17 during the 2018 Gulf Coast Poker Championship. Players from around the globe participated in Beau Rivage Resort & Casino’s annual event, but the top prize stayed local as Timothy Burt of D’Iberville, Miss., won the GCPC Main Event. The skilled player also took home second place and $42,563 in the tournament’s No Limit Hold’em opening event.

A statewide and tournament-record 375 players entered the Gulf Coast Poker Championship main event with hopes of claiming a piece of the $447,375 total prize pool. After the first day of play, that field had been whittled down to 37, and in the end, Burt was the last man standing. Hiep Doan of Marrero, La., took second place, while Warren Sheaves of Arden, N.C., placed third.

The 2018 Gulf Coast Poker Championship kicked off with a No Limit Hold’em event that drew a record 1,738 total entrants and $504,020 prize pool. The $68,952 first place prize went to Jerry Giroir of Lafayette, La who beat out main event winner Timothy Burt. The top 207 places each received a piece of prize pool. Giroir made a couple of deep runs throughout the tournament and won second place and $16,467 of the $113,680 Monster Stack prize pool.

“The Gulf Coast Poker Championship continues to draws more players each year,” said Beau Rivage Poker Manager Henry Garrison. “We attribute this year’s record numbers to our exciting new format – the ‘Beau Format’ – where all Day 2 players are guaranteed to be in the money. It’s been very well received by the poker community. We always seek input and feedback from our players as we strive to make our poker tournaments the best in the region.”

This year’s tournament included 13 events over the course of the 11-day tournament, including the first-ever flat Heads up NLH event. Other events included an 8-Handed No-Limit Hold’em, Big O, Pot Limit Omaha, Limit Omaha 8 or Better, a Monster Stack with a hybrid version of the big blind ante format, as well as nightly Super Satellites, Mega Satellites and No-Limit Hold’em Tournaments.
