SPRINGFIELD (MA) Feb. 26 - The Massachusetts Casino Career Training Institute (MCCTI) Gaming School, the first in the Commonwealth, opened this morning in downtown Springfield. Registration is ongoing with seats available for classes starting in April, May and June. The courses are geared toward those interested in beginning a career with MGM Springfield, the Commonwealth’s first luxury resort and entertainment destination, but do not yet have experience or training as table game dealers. MGM Springfield will hire 450 table games and poker dealers to open the resort later this year.
MGM Springfield is partnering with MCCTI, a collaboration of Holyoke Community College (HCC) and Springfield Technical Community College (STCC). Students will learn from professional table-games instructors. Courses are administered by MCCTI, with instructors, curriculum materials and gaming equipment provided by professional casino staff from MGM Springfield.
The new Gaming School at 95 State Street in downtown Springfield, adjacent to the MGM site, features:
15 professional trainers, 30 table games -- four poker, four roulette, four craps, two mini baccarat, 12 blackjack, and four novelty tables.
Alex Dixon, MGM Springfield’s General Manager, said, “This is an exciting day for us at MGM Springfield as the first group of Gaming School students takes a big step toward fulfilling dreams. Soon, local residents will be trained and ready to start a successful new career path in an exciting industry. But time is of the essence. We will begin hiring very soon and the earlier candidates are trained, the sooner they can audition for our team.”
HCC President Christina Royal said, "The opening of the MCCTI Gaming School is a testament to the way in which collaborations between community colleges and workforce partners can bridge the gap between the skills of individuals and the needs of employers. HCC and STCC are that bridge. We provide residents with pathways to careers that lift families out of poverty, raise lifetime earnings and reduce costs to society. And we ensure that employers have the skilled workers they need to enable their businesses to thrive."
STCC President John B. Cook added, “We know that economic development and workforce development are not separate efforts. It is imperative that economic and workforce development are integrated for the benefit of our region’s businesses and citizens. The investment of MGM Springfield will allow many of our citizens to begin the process of getting employed and establishing a career pathway.”

Tuition ranges from $199 to $599 for a single specialized game class. MGM Springfield is offering a tuition reimbursement program for successful students who go on to work at the resort.
Students who successfully complete two table-game courses will receive an automatic audition for a job at MGM Springfield, where they will find flexible full- and part-time table games dealer positions on day, swing and overnight shifts. No formal education is required to apply to the school, and beginners are welcome.
MGM Springfield is offering a tuition-reimbursement plan for students entering classes at the Gaming School. Students who successfully complete two or more courses at the new Gaming School, and then obtain a job with MGM Springfield, will be eligible for the tuition reimbursement if they remain employed with MGM Springfield for one year after the property’s grand opening.
Dixon said, “We are pleased to be able to offer assistance to jobseekers. We hope opportunities like this allow individuals an opportunity to explore new and exciting jobs and be part of an amazing adventure as we prepare for opening.”
