LAS VEGAS (December 14, 2016) – Teresa Gangelhoff, travel agent with Affordable Travel Vacations in Minneapolis, turned her family’s Figgy Pear Flatbread into an award-winning dish when she took first place in the third annual MGM Resorts Recipe Showdown in Las Vegas. Open to meeting planners, travel professionals and leisure partners, the competition was designed by MGM Resorts to showcase clients’ culinary talents and their favorite family recipes.
Gangelhoff earned her way to the finals in Las Vegas after winning the Minneapolis Showdown, one of 13 regional cooking competitions held across the country and Canada between June and September. The surprising flavor profile and different textures of the Figgy Pear Flatbread was a winning combination for the Midwest competitor. As her prize, Gangelhoff received an all-expense-paid trip to the South Beach Wine & Food Festival in Miami, February 22 – 26, 2017.
“I was bit overwhelmed when my name was announced because there were so many amazing entries at this year’s Recipe Showdown,” Teresa Gangelhoff said. A special item may have given her some extra luck. “I brought my grandmother’s apron and had it sitting on the corner of my work table; I know she was watching over me that day.”
Maggie Williams, with IMF in Atlanta, won second place for her Mediterranean Meatball Sliders, and Julie Kercher, with HelmsBriscoe out of Scottsdale, received third place for her Tilapia Fish Tacos with Arugula. A digital cookbook with the 13 winning recipes from each city showdown will be available soon.
The finalists went head-to-head during the main event. Held in MGM Grand Garden Arena’s professional kitchen, the competition was judged by four of Las Vegas’ top executive chefs – Wilfried Bergerhausen of Le Cirque at Bellagio, Joshua Smith from BARDOT Brasserie at ARIA, Johnny Church of Aureole and Mandalay Bay, and Steve Benjamin of L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon at MGM Grand.
