R&B singer, songwriter and producer Kem independently released his first CD, Kemistry, in March 2002, selling more than 10,000 CDs before he signed with Universal Motown. “Love Calls,” the first single from the album, garnered more than 50,000 spins on Urban Adult Radio stations (UAC) which positioned it as the second most played record in 2003 and the most played record of 2004.
His second album, KEM ALBUM II, was released in May 2005 and was certified Gold after only two weeks. The album’s hit single, “I Can't Stop Loving You,” was designated as Radio & Records and Billboard’s No. 1 Adult R&B Record of 2005. The single received an NAACP Image Award nomination for Outstanding Song and Kem was also nominated for the NAACP’s Outstanding Male Artist the same year.
His third studio album, Intimacy, was released in August 2010, debuting at No. 2 on Billboard’s Top 200 list. The first single from Intimacy, “Why Would You Stay,” climbed to No. 1 on Urban AC Radio Charts, where it stayed for two straight weeks.
In addition to headlining national and international tours, Kem has shared the stage with Fantasia, Ruben Studdard, Chaka Khan and Kindred Family Soul, among many others. His musical talent has been recognized by filmmakers, including Tyler Perry who solicited Kem to write and perform the song, “Tonight,” for the “Madea’s Family Reunion” soundtrack. Additionally, his remake of Nat King Cole’s song, “Fascination,” is featured in the Antonio Banderas movie, “Take the Lead.”
