A Legend Rises As Anderson Silva Clashes with Nick Diaz at UFC 183 Saturday, January 31 in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS – One of the biggest sports weekends of the year will see the return of one of the biggest names in mixed martial arts, as UFC® legend and former middleweight champion Anderson Silva makes his return to the Octagon® to face one of the most dangerous strikers in the sport, former STRIKEFORCE® welterweight champion Nick Diaz, on Saturday,  Jan. 31 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
Widely considered the greatest mixed martial artist in history, Silva (33-6, fighting out of Curitiba, Brazil), will make his return after a devastating leg injury that sidelined him for more than a year. In his way will be the enigmatic Stockton bad boy Diaz (27-9-1, fighting out of Stockton, Calif.), who has been asking for a showdown with the “The Spider” for years. This 185-pound superfight is sure to be one of the best fights of 2015.
In addition, two of the best women’s bantamweight fighters on the planet clash as second-ranked Miesha Tate and No. 3 Sara McMann will battle it out to take one step closer to a rematch with champion Ronda Rousey. Tate (15-5, fighting out of Las Vegas, Nev.) has long been one of the premiere names in women’s MMA, and after dominant performances in her last two outings she once again finds herself on the brink of title contention. On the other side of the Octagon will be another former title challenger hoping to earn a chance to avenge the only loss of her career. McMann (8-1, fighting out of Gaffney, S.C.), a  silver medalist in women’s freestyle wrestling at the 2004 Olympic Games, will need to use her elite-level wrestling to dictate where the fight goes in order to secure her spot atop the division.
Also, in a battle of hard-hitting welterweights, No. 13 Jordan Mein (29-9, fighting out of Lethbridge, Alberta Canada) will meet former title challenger Thiago Alves (25-9, fighting out of Coconut Creek, Fla.). Together, the two men have 28 knockout victories and the ground game to back up their skills on the feet. With Mein being one of the brightest young stars in the division, a win over a former title contender such as Alves will put him in prime position to battle a top-10 opponent in his next outing.
Other bouts for UFC 183 include:
  • Currently riding a four-fight win streak, eleventh-ranked middleweight Thales Leites (24-4, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) takes on No. 14 Tim Boetsch (18-7, fighting out of Sunbury, Pa.), who is coming off a second round knockout win over Brad Tavares.
  • In a classic striker vs. grappler match Tom Watson (17-7, fighting out of Southampton, England) will fact Rafael Natal (18-6-1, fighting out of New York, N.Y.) in a middleweight showdown.
  • A featherweight showdown between The Ultimate Fighter season 14 winner Diego Brandao (22-10, fighting out of Manaus, Brazil) and submission ace Jimy Hettes (11-2, fighting out of Swoyersville, Penn.).
  • Submission specialist Richardson Moreira (7-3, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) meets countryman Ildemar Alcantara (20-7, fighting out of Soure, Para, Brazil) in a middleweight showdown.
  • Middleweight jiu-jitsu ace Andy Enz (8-2, fighting out of Anchorage, Alaska) squares off against former The Ultimate Fighter®: Brazil 2 contestant Thiago Santos (9-3, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil).
