MGM Resorts International’s Tom Fazio-Designed Course Selected as No. 2 Best Casino Course and No. 20 on Top 200 Resort Course List

08 January 2019

BILOXI, Miss. (Jan. 8, 2019) - Garnering more accolades for its majestic beauty, brilliant design and playability, Fallen Oak has again been lauded by Golfweek as one of the country’s best courses, earning the No. 2 spot on its Best Casino Course list and No. 20 on its list of Top 200 Resort Courses.

Among casino courses listed in Golfweek’s December 2018 issue, Fallen Oak ranks No. 2, a position its held since opening in 2007. Fallen Oak trails only its sister MGM Resorts International course Shadow Creek, which recently played host to “The Match,” a 22-hole showdown between Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, in the standings.

For the seventh consecutive year, Fallen Oak, a Tom Fazio-designed masterpiece at the edge of the DeSoto National Forest, once again landed in the top echelon on the publication’s prestigious list of Top 200 Resort Courses, as listed in Golfweek’s 2019 Ultimate Guide. Fallen Oak was the second highest ranked casino course, bested only by sister course Shadow Creek.

Every year, Golfweek’s elite team of course raters, which currently boasts more than 850 evaluators, surveys more than 3,600 courses – grading each nominated course on the basis of Golfweek’s 10 strict standards of evaluation, which include Routing, Quality of Shaping, Overall Land Plan, Greens and Surrounds, Variety and Memorability of Par 3s, 4s and 5s, Tree and Landscape Management, Conditioning and what Golfweek calls a ’Walk in the Park’ test . Collectively, these knowledgeable raters have turned in more than 75,000 votes to compile Golfweek’s Best courses lists.

The 510-acre, par-72 Fallen Oak stretches 7,497 yards from the back tees and offers five sets of tees and strategic play options to challenge golfers of all skill levels. Each hole winds through an ever-changing terrain featuring dramatic elevation changes incorporated among more than 4,000 oaks and other hardwood trees, ponds, streams and wetlands.

The publication’s raters were as taken with Fazio’s gem as some of the most heralded names of golf who have played the course over the last 10 years on the PGA TOUR Champions. The tour returns March 25-31, 2019, when a field of 78 professionals vie for the Rapiscan Systems Classic title.

“Since its opening in 2006, Fallen Oak has earned a reputation as a must-play, destination course,” said Travis Lunn, president and chief operating officer of Beau Rivage Resort & Casino. “These honors solidify the sentiments made by our guests, as well as some of the legends of the game, that playing a round of golf at Fallen Oak is a complete golfing experience, and a round that they remember. I’m grateful for our talented team at Fallen Oak who care so much about our guests and the course experience. Congratulations to them as these honors are a testament to their unwavering commitment to excellence.”

The clubhouse and practice facilities alone put Fallen Oak among the top courses in the region. Built to resemble an Acadian-style Southern mansion, the 12,000-square foot clubhouse houses a 1,000-square foot pro shop and locker facilities. The 70-seat lounge and restaurant features top-level dining and a panoramic view of the 18th hole, as well as the majestic live oak that gives Fallen Oak its name.

Fallen Oak’s Director of Golf, Rick Gehr, was honored as the 2018 Gulf States PGA Merchandiser of the Year at the Gulf States PGA conference in December. The Merchandiser of the Year award recognizes Gulf States PGA professionals who have demonstrated superior skills as merchandisers in the promotion of golf. The pro shop at Fallen Oak offers a full range of men’s and women’s apparel, Fallen Oak logo merchandise, accessories, gift and golf equipment.
