Go “Over The Edge” April 18 for Habitat for Humanity of the Mississippi Gulf Coast

Gulfport, Miss. (Jan. 14, 2015) – Imagine being high above the Mississippi Gulf Coast, taking a deep breath and stepping out "over the edge" to rappel down Beau Rivage Resort & Casino, the tallest building in the state.

On Saturday, April 18, a limited number of participants will experience the thrill first-hand when Habitat for Humanity of the Mississippi Gulf Coast (HFHMGC) introduces the popular "Over The Edge" urban rappelling fundraising event to the state.

The event was announced Jan. 13 at a launch party at Beau Rivage, where potential participants tried on rappelling gear and learned more about what it takes to go "over the edge."

"We’re taking our long-term partnership with Beau Rivage to new heights and offering our supporters a unique way to raise funds to benefit Habitat programs," said Adele Lyons, director of development at HFHMGC. "Daredevil or not, you can get involved and support Habitat’s work helping local families have a decent place to call home."

"Habitat’s work rebuilding the Mississippi Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina has been remarkable," said George P. Corchis, Jr., President and COO of MGM Resorts International’s Southern Operations. "The opportunity to go ‘over the edge’ of Mississippi’s tallest building is an extraordinary way to recognize, celebrate and commemorate the organization’s progress while raising essential funds for its future."

Individuals can either sign up to rappel down themselves or nominate someone else to be "tossed" off the building. Participants or "edgers" who commit to raise or donate a minimum of $1,000 will get the chance to rappel 278’ from the Beau Chene Terrace suite on the 27th floor of Beau Rivage. No skill or previous rappelling experience is required. There is a limited number of rappelling spots available for the event.

Event sponsorships are also available, with packages that offer benefits and recognition as well as rappelling.

A professional rappelling company will oversee all safety and logistics for the event. More than 25,000 rappellers have safely participated in over 500 "Over The Edge" events since 2003. This is the first "Over The Edge" event to benefit Habitat for Humanity and the first in Mississippi.

Participants committed to rappel include:

    • Kelly Bennett – DJ, Walter and Kelly in the Morning, WMJY Magic 93.7
    • Anthony Del Vescovo – Vice President, General Counsel, Beau Rivage
    • Ricky Dombrowski – Councilman, City of Gulfport

    • Wade Howk - Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, Hollywood Casino and Boomtown Casino Biloxi
