Area Donations Part of $5 Million Distributed to Charities in 2014 by MGM Resorts’ 62,000 Employees

Biloxi, Miss., Oct. 28, 2014 Beau Rivage employees raised $37,600 for nonprofit organizations and programs serving South Mississippi during the 2014 MGM Resorts International Foundation employee-giving campaign. In recognition of the Foundation’s 12th anniversary, Beau Rivage employees made site visits and check presentations this week to nonprofit agencies and programs that were awarded Foundation grants.

“These donations are a reflection of the outstanding generosity of our employees and their dedication to enhance the quality of life for thousands of people,” said George P. Corchis, Jr., President and Chief Operating Officer of MGM Resorts Southern Operations., “It’s wonderful to see our employees’ commitment to the communities where they live, work and care for their families.”

The MGM Resorts Foundation provides employees the opportunity to make direct contributions to the charity of their choice, providing it operates where the employee lives, or divert a portion of their paycheck to one of the following funding areas: 

  • Employee Emergency Relief Fund – Provides monies to co-workers experiencing hardships.
  • United Way – Donations support the United Way of South Mississippi.
  • Community Fund – Governed by employees through the Community Grants Committee (CGC), comprised of employees from a volunteer committee that represent departments from the resort. The CGC committee reviewed the grant proposals from community organizations and determined the Foundation’s grant recipients for the 2014 in the following areas:
--Strengthening Neighborhoods:  Donations support programs that foster safe and vital communities where people want to live, work and raise their families.  Key areas of investment are revitalization of neighborhoods and self-sufficiency programs.
--Strengthening Children:  Provides donation support for early childhood development and strong prevention/ intervention programs which empower children to be successful.
--Strength in Difficult Times:  Recovery and counseling services for persons impacted by abuse, addictive behaviors, mental health problems or challenging life circumstances.
  • Children’s Medical Support Fund – Provides fellow employees with short-term financial assistance when their child is faced with a severe medical emergency.
The Community Grant Committee awarded the following recipients:

Bay Area Food Bank (Backpack Program)    $5,000
The Backpack Programs helps to strengthen chronically hungry children by providing them with healthy meals and snacks to take home from school on the weekends. This program is for elementary school aged children and their siblings who do not have enough food to eat between school lunch on Friday and school breakfast on Monday morning. Bags of food from the Backpack Program containing enough food to feed one child over the weekend are distributed every Friday during the school year to those children who have been identified as chronically hungry.       
Catholic Social services (Case Management)     $5,000
Catholic Social and Community Services, Inc. is proud to offer case management to its service area. This program strives to fulfill its mission of demonstrating our preferential option for the poor by providing services that promote self-sufficiency. The Case Management program allows for the client’s total situation to be assessed and for clients to work with case managers to establish a recovery plan. The case management process and the established recovery plan allows the client to see their financial circumstance in a concrete manner and to explore new means of addressing the underlying issues for a long term solution. It further challenges and assists the client to identify the underlying issues that are barriers to their recovery, such as domestic violence, addiction, and education level, in order to find solutions for long term success and sustainability.                                                                                                                                                 
Del E’pee Deaf Center  (Children in a deaf World)   $5,000
Strengthens children and their families by bringing deaf children and children of deaf parents into a hearing world. Providing sign language interpreters for families, teaching sign language to hearing people with deaf family members and providing interaction through activities such as deaf summer camps, special programs and fun educational activities to help merge two worlds separated by the culture  and communication barriers.
Gulf Coast Women’s Shelter (Outreach Prevention Education Program)       $5,000
The Gulf Coast Women’s Center for Nonviolence’s Children’s Programs believes that providing a comprehensive array of services to children who have been victimized by domestic violence and/or sexual assault and presenting violence prevention education programs in area schools are the best opportunities to break the cycle of intergenerational violence. By providing individual, group and specialized services to child victims at the Centers two shelters the center helps to reduce the stress and socially inappropriate behaviors often found in  child victims and increase school readiness and school success. Additionally, prevention education programs teach all children alternatives to violent behavior and decreases incidents of violence at school and at home.   
Hope Haven of Hancock County (Stewards of Children’s Program     $2,600
The Stewards of Children’s Program put the focus where it needs to be on the adults in our community. This nationally acclaimed  program works, in every community that has embraced it the incident of child abuse has decreased by up to 20%. The program started about one year ago. They now intent to expand it to include Hancock and Harrison County and into Jackson County in the future. These three counties account for almost one third of the total number of abused children in the entire State of Mississippi. The goal is to utilize our six trained facilitators to conduct 2 prevention workshops each per month with an  average of 15 people workshop, which will train about 2,00 people.  
Gulf Coast Women’s Shelter (Program Funds)     $5,000
The Gulf Coast Women’s Center for Non-Violence provides a 24/7 crisis line, emergency shelter, hospital responses, and a comprehensive array of services to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault living in the centers six county services area of South Mississippi. By providing these services to victims, the Center is able to increase victim safety, assist in a victim’s recovery and help individual and families live a violence free life.
Hancock County Food Pantry  (Food Pantry)    5,000
The Hancock County Food Pantry, Inc was founded in 1986 by community churches to provide food and personal hygiene products to the needy families of Hancock County, Ms who may be living at or below the federal poverty level and are unable to provide food for themselves and/or their family. The Food Pantry is staffed entirely by volunteers and spends more than 91percent of all donated funds to purchase food and personal hygiene products to give away to families in need.  
Executive Council of the Gen Synod of the United Church of Christ  (Emergency Assistance)   $5,000
The Back Bay Mission Emergency Assistance program is a primary provider of utility assistance in the area, directly correlated with aiding an individual or family to meet requirements for obtaining or maintaining affordable housing.  Case management and referral services also provide additional supports to continue on the path to self-sufficiency. The goal of the Emergency Assistance Program is to assist those living in poverty in the Mississippi Gulf Coast region to obtain affordable housing and increased self-sufficiency though administration of financial and direct service supports.
Organizations, like the Del’Eppe Deaf Center Incorporated, have been making a difference in the community on the Mississippi Gulf Coast for a long time. “One of the largest deaf communities in Mississippi is on the Gulf Coast,” said de l’Eppe Deaf Center Executive Director Greg Crapo. “Since it is a silent disability, it doesn’t tug at the heart strings like other visual disabilities and we have difficulty raising money. We are extremely grateful for the relationship and all around support we’ve received from Beau Rivage and MGM Resorts since the resort first opened. This year’s $5,000 grant will be used for our ‘Children in a Deaf World’ program that provides sign language interpreters for families, teaches sign language to hearing people with deaf family members and provides interaction through activities such as deaf summer camps and educational programs.”

Beau Rivage’s parent company, MGM Resorts International, absorbs all administrative costs for operating and managing the Foundation including the creation and dissemination of the request for proposals for the grant funds and the actual distribution of the monies. As a result, 100 percent of every dollar donated by employees goes directly to the community-based organizations.
