Coastal Mississippi Native Wins $110,266 First Place in Main Event

26 September 2019

The Mississippi poker scene geared up for another record-breaking year  during the 2019 Gulf Coast Poker Championship, with players from around the globe lined up for Beau Rivage Resort & Casino’s annual event. In the Main Event, Andrew Barfield of Ocean Springs, Miss., took first place with his hand of pocket nines earning him $110,266.

A total of 377 players entered the Gulf Coast Poker Championship Main Event with hopes of claiming a piece of the $449,761 total prize pool. This year’s total entrants for the Main Event beat its own state record from last year. Yousef Salek of Meridian, Miss., took second place, while Tim Sanderson of Covington, La., placed third.

Barfield has played previous tournaments, but this is his largest payload to date. A poker player of 10 years, he began playing in college with friends, and routinely plays a few tournaments a year including previous Gulf Coast Poker Championship and Million Dollar Heater tournaments at Beau Rivage.

When asked what he was going to do next, Barfield calmly replied, “ Go back to work. Maybe plan a trip to  Disney.” Barfield is married and a father of three and a practicing physician at Keesler Air Force Base.

The 2019 Gulf Coast Poker Championship kicked off with a $300,000 Guaranteed event that drew in 1,638 total entrants and $475,020 total prize pool. This year’s tournament included 13 events over the course of the 11-day tournament, including an 8-Max No-Limit Hold’em, Big O, Pot Limit Omaha, Heads Up No Limit Hold ‘em, $50,000 Guaranteed Monster, Little Monster, and more.
